How many of us, at one time or another, have yelled out “DO OVER!”? In someway we have made a mistake that has had a profound impact on the position we find ourselves in, feel we were cheated, or just thought that ‘it’ could be done better and we want to do just that, do it again. In the film industry that seems to be becoming more and more prevalent as time ticks on. Remaking movies or taking a popular TV series and basing a movie on it seems to be the new trend.
Is this a good thing? Bad? Rewarding or embarrassing? The simple answer is yes. You can take an old movie with a great story poorly told and create something special... Or, you can make something that causes you to seek employment in the fast-food industry. The problem is your audience; you can make a film that is very well done with good, well known actors that wins you Oscars and is financially rewarding beyond your wildest dreams, or gets you laughed at and leaves you financially ruined. The difference between the two outcomes? Society. Public opinion. Does your topic relate to your audience? Does it let them escape reality? Is this type of movie trending? Do they spend $15 a ticket to see it?
Your goal when you decide to re-make a movie is to improve it; maybe add a new twist or tell the story from a different perspective but, improve it. Filmmakers are continuing to invest in re-makes because they have found that they are being successful and making a profit on their investment.
